Stealth, Cloaking, Phantom Technology:
How it works - and how it doesn't
(Tutorial Part 3)
------------------------------------------------------
(rt) Having reviewed the basic mechanics of cloaking
and stealth tech, what are the risks, then? Myths and
rumors abound on this issue, and five experts will
probably give you six opinions ...
Well, here is ours: DON'T PANIC! If individual
consultants (and sometimes even whole corporations -
especially those featuring products like doorway
generators etc. which truly sophisticated cloaking
technology will effectively render superfluous ...)
are having their field day scaring the newbies, more
often than not even believing devoutly in their own
phantastic horror scenarios, this should be no reason
for you to join the fray!
So can cloaking get you banned from the search
engines' indices? The straight answer to that one
is: Yes - but ...!
Fact is, most cloakers are achieving very good
rankings and very many of these are really quite
sticky as far as search engines and their volatile
databases go. If you are working in a very competitive
industry (e.g. adult web sites, real estate, and
others), chances are you won't ever rank in any major
SE's Top10 league unless you are using state of the
art stealth tech.
This is not to say cloaking isn't without its risks.
While hysteria is never the best of advisors,
trivializing the matter and ignoring the real stakes
involved will obviously do you no good either.
One would have thought that the final answer should
rest with the search engines: after all, it's their
own turf. Unfortunately, their public statements
and declarations are, contrary to what one might
expect, no great help. Quite the contrary in fact:
most SE officials will tell you that they regard
cloaking (ANY form of cloaking, mind you!) as "spam".
Some spinmasters will even claim that they are
actively eliminating it. In a few cases they will
attempt to create some mystique around what they are
doing ("Very effective technology to counter cloaking
in our possession ... not authorized to tell you more
... blah blah.") However, even supposing it's true, it
certainly doesn't show in their search results!
So can you really get banned for cloaking?
Categorically yes - if, for example, your competitors
have snitched on you to the search engines, and if the
SEs' staff have manually checked and compared your
spider fodder with what you are actually serving your
human visitors. It can happen, too, if you overdo your
submissions or if there are significant changes in
your historical submission patterns. E.g. if your site
used to submit say 3-5 pages a month over a certain
period of time, only to start submitting hundreds of
pages per week all of a sudden, you may indeed be
inviting trouble: in a worst case scenario a human
editor may come along to check the matter out.
The results of these checkups may get your site
penalized (i.e. your pages will be given a less than
optimal ranking), or it may get you banned from the
search engine's index altogether, either for a limited
time or even forever.
So you probably wouldn't want to run the risks
involved when catering to a high profile site focusing
strongly on branding and sporting a nifty, easy to
remember domain name to go with it, the loss of which
could seriously damage image and turnover.
On the other hand, it is highly unlikely that you will
get penalized or banned with more than one search
engine at a time. Bad enough as this may be, you could
always recur to setting up additional "transit"
domains full of doorways and phantom pages from where
your human visitors would be redirected to your site
proper.
Note that we do NOT condone cloaking for misleading
("spamming") purposes: it is counter productive and
will only serve to make life more difficult for all
parties concerned. If a user tries to search for
relevant information links and your site floods the
results pages #1 through #40, chances are you won't
need any hard hitting competitors to get reported!
Finally, to disperse all doubts in this matter: while
cloaking is a highly efficient and effective
technique, it will do you little good if you don't
have the content to match. After all, surfers will
always be free to vote with their feet (well, mice,
really ...), and if you are trying to insult their
intelligence by subterfuge, don't pretend to surprise
if they resort to returning the favor with a
vengeance.
Next, let's have a look at phantom pages and how to
optimize them in detail.

However, note that they will only debunk the weaker,
non-industrial strength strategies, namely those based

Don't Lose Your Foreign Web Site Visitors by
Insulting Them With Brain-Dead Translation Services
------------------------------------------------------
(rt) For some internet marketers it's become a cutting
edge strategy to offer multi lingual navigation and
promo material on their sites in the hope of expanding
their client base. While it is true that international
users whose mother tongue is anything but English are
beginning to hit the web in hefty numbers, catering to
them in their own linguistic format is an art in
itself which doesn't lend itself to the cheap and easy
"no brainer" pseudo solutions currently being hawked
on the net. If you offer them one of those, chances
are you'll fend them off forever. Count it as a
well-meaning blunder as much as you will, fact is
these clients-to-be can be quite relentless if you
convey the impression that you couldn't care less
about offering first class services. Don't forget that
very many people actually love their mother tongue and
don't enjoy seeing it massacred.
Linguistics and translation are sciences in their own
right demanding due respect or - at the very least -
professional handling. One thing the non-expert should
get rid off - the sooner the better! - is the fond
myth that familiarity with your mother tongue implies
that you know all about language and its social
ramifications. And it's not about lack of command of
a foreign tongue either - more often than not, it's
the basic concepts which are flawed, such as the
belief that a word-by-word translation, though
admittedly not very elegant, will at least give you a
"general idea" of the source text's content. While
this may actually be true to some extent within the
very limited context of highly specialized technical
fields (academic papers on chemistry rich in formulae
and procedural descriptions being a case in point),
the old law school adage "a little knowledge is a
dangerous thing" rules even here. Needless to say,
relying on imperfect automatization can make matters
even worse.
Translation bots tend to reflect this faulty
reasoning, and their backing by popular opinion -
uneducated in these matters as it usually is - is no
great help either.
Here's just one example of what can happen if you
opt for less-than-professional (read: usually free)
"translation services". Let's take a real life German
site rich in textual content and have a look at what
the most popular translator bot makes of it.
"Welcomely
tsigaan soft systems
tsigaan news
Software and computer services, also very good, give
it meanwhile like the proverbial sand at the sea.
Thousands of companies and Hirnen compile world-wide
daily the most refined solutions, and although within
this area - like everywhere in the life - all gold is
long not, which probably shines there, then the
standards and the requirements of the users in the
last years nevertheless ever more rose."
Source:
"Translation":
Seriously - would you really want to see your site
represented in this manner? Welcomely, indeed!
And don't try to argue that this is, after all,
"better than nothing" - it's the seeming familiarity
of the language presented, the fond illusion of "at
least getting the gist of it" that's the really nasty
part. Because it can (and most certainly will!) lead
you astray in ever so many subtle ways, and in the end
you may be worse off by a long shot than if you hadn't
understood a single word in the first place. Simply
ask yourself if you would sign a million dollar
contract of this linguistic "quality" ...
With the current US dominance of the WWW clearly
waning (as all major studies and analyses will show),
getting linked internationally will become ever more
critical. World wide, surfers aren't content with
sticking to local or localized search engines in their
own language: rather, the English language is rapidly
gaining ground everywhere, even in the former
communist states, not mention in formerly French or
Spanish dominated regions. These people, more and more
of whom are well educated, bilingual and fairly well
versed in English, are increasingly making use of
stateside search engines. It is only a question of
time until even All-American engines will have to
adapt to this situation, if only to accomodate their
international advertisers. Hence, it stands to reason
that only link popularity based on real world web
demographics (as opposed to mere wishful thinking and
established political and cultural prejudices) will be
able to satisfy advertisers' and users' demands.
So do it right or do it not! Either employ a bona fide
professional translation service or get someone to
revamp your online copy to accomodate all those
international clients whose command of English, while
fairly well informed, is not quite up to par with your
US or UK biased industrial lingo, er, parlance.
This holds true vice versa for non-English sites as
well, of course: don't even dream of relying on one of
the translator bots doing a good job and permitting
you to cut one single sale! And while your English
teacher at school may have lauded your enthusiasm over
and again, don't delude yourself that this makes you a
native speaker.
If you are interested in English or American or
Australian or New Zealand clients at all, don't give
them the impression of amateurish incompetence by
refusing to acknowledge the fact that your command of
English may be less than perfect. This is, after all,
nothing to be ashamed of - whereas trying to get by
this problem on the cheap very well should be! If
there's one thing you want to avoid in marketing it's
getting laughed out of court.

rather, pretend to do so - use at own risk:

Module mod_rewrite: - The Apache Server
Power Commander!
(Tutorial Part 1)
------------------------------------------------------
(bro) You may have encountered the name
"mod_rewrite" before when surfing the web. For all of
our readers who are not intimately familiar with this
nifty Apache Web Server module - and, of course, for
those who don't know it all - we are presenting this
small introductory tutorial as a multipart serial.
Module mod_rewrite is a package of program routines
which can be added to the Apache Web Server.
(Note that it will not run under other web servers!)
Its primary function is the manipulation of URLs.
The module is very versatile as we are going to
illustrate here with a number of real world examples.
However, be very careful and meticulous when working
with it! Some mistakes you might be liable to make
could generate a logical loop, causing a never-ceasing
100% CPU load.
To steer clear from this, we will start off with some
very simple examples.
Before we can get going, however, you will have to
check whether the module is installed on your web
server at all.
There are several ways to go about this:
1. Ask your system administrator - provided he or she
knows. They really should, but unfortunately some
plain do not ...
Take care, though: if you are sharing your host
server with hundreds of other domains, your inquiry
might rouse some sleeping dogs, as usage of
mod_rewrite will always entail some increased CPU
load.
2. Check your Apache configuration file if you can
access it. One possible standard path might be:
/etc/httpd/httpd.conf
However, your mileage may obviously vary.
3. Check it out with one of the following examples.
If it works fine, mod_rewrite is indeed installed
on your system. If it isn't, you will get the
following message when calling any web page of your
choice: "Internal Server Error"
Also, you will see this entry in file "error.log":
"Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps mis-spelled
or defined by a module not included in the server
configuration."
If your site generates heavy traffic, this method
is not recommended, as every visitor will receive
this very same error message during your test.
So now let's dig into our first practical example!
We will assume that you will be using mod_rewrite
only for your own web site, i.e. not as a generalized
cross server setup.
To effect this, some entries in file .htaccess are
required.
The .htaccess File
------------------
For this technique to work, you will need to upload
a file named ".htaccess" (please note the period/dot
at the beginning of the file name!) to your server
directory.
This can be done via telnet or ftp.
(Warning! .htaccess should only be uploaded in "ASCII
mode", i.e. not in binary mode!)
If you already have a ".htaccess" file, for example
one with the following entries:
Options Includes +ExecCGI
AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .html
simply add our code sample to it.
-----------------------------------
IMPORTANT!
----------
ADJUSTMENTS IN FILE ".htaccess":
please edit in ASCII or plain text
editor like Notepad etc.
-----------------------------------
The first two entries will start the module:
RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
Tip: Entry "RewriteEngine off" will override all
subsequent commands. This is a very useful feature:
instead of having to comment out all subsequent
lines, all you need to do is set an "off".
If your system administrator does not allow for
implementation of "Options +FollowSymlinks", you will
not be able to restrict usage of mod_rewrite to
your directories but will instead have to apply it
server wide.
The next required entry is this:
RewriteBase /
"/" stands for the base URL. Should you have another
one, you will want to include it. However, "/" is
normally the entry for "http://www.YourDomain.com".
And now to the entries proper!
Let us assume that you want to block unauthorized
access to your file .htaccess. On some servers
you can easily read this file simply by entering a URL
of the following format in your browser's address
field: http://www.domain.com/.htaccess - a serious
security gap, as your .htaccess file's contents may
reveal more about your site's setup to the educated
eye than you may want others to know.
To block this access, enter the following:
RewriteRule ^\.htaccess$ - [F]
This rule translates to:
If someone tries to access file .htaccess, system
shall generate error code "HTTP response of 403".
The file name ^\.htaccess$ is contained in a regular
expression, to wit:
^ Start of line anchor
$ End of line anchor
\. In regular expressions the dot "." denotes a
meta character and must be protected by a
backslash (\) if you want an actual dot (period)
instead.
The file name must be located exactly between start
and end of line anchor. This will ensure that only
this specific file name and no other will generate
the error code.
[F] : special flag "forbidden".
In this example, the complete ".htaccess" file will
now consist of these lines:
RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^\.htaccess$ - [F]
If we add our code to a pre-existing ".htaccess" file,
we might, for example, get the following entries:
Options Includes +ExecCGI
AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .html
RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^\.htaccess$ - [F]
This introduction covers the basics required to
operate with mod_rewrite.
In the second part of this tutorial we will explain
the use of conditions in configuring the module.

1. Added to Dogpile and MetaCrawler
Google was recently added to meta engines Dogpile and

traffic to your site if you're well ranked on this
most trendy of new search engines.
2. Google and Directories
The Hardin Meta Directory has recently discovered a
predilection on Google's part for directories.

3. Google Traffic Increases By 70,000%
No typo! Google ended 1999 averaging about 7 million
searches each day, which amounts to a roughly
70,000% increase over the 10,000 searches per day in
December 1998. An ongoing trend, it seems: in
January 2000, Google averaged more than 10 million
searches a day.
4. Finally: Google and RealNames
Google has recently entered into a partnership with
RealNames and their human-edited catalog.
If the first Google result differs from the RN
result, the RN result is shown at the top of the page
with a small "RN" to the right of the returned result.

GoTo Announces Launch Of Directory
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
On March 1st, GoTo promises to launch the GoTo.com
Directory. Quote from their press release:
"During a recent consumer research study, we found
that many of our users prefer to click on, rather than
type in, their search queries. Theyve also told us
they would like to refine their searches, and like to
have navigational cues (in the form of search terms)
to help them while they search.
In response to that feedback, we developed the
GoTo.com Directory. The Directory is a great
enhancement to our search engine because it has
powerful refinement capability. The Directory
provides category-based navigation to enable users to
refine their searches, and even displays suggestions
and related topics to help users with their search.
Whats exciting about the Directory is that it
provides another great way for people to search. For
users who prefer to type in their keyword, they can
still do that to find what theyre looking for on the
Web!
The Directory further improves GoTo's search product
and its position as a great search engine for
consumers. The Directory launches March 1st. We invite
you to check it out!"
So do we, so do we ... :-)

Robert Woodhead:
"Tips on getting listed in Yahoo
(and the other big indexes)" - Part 1
------------------------------------------------------
Intro:
Robert Woodhead is well known for writing one of the
first computer roleplaying games (Wizardry) as well
as one of the first anti-virus programs (Virex).
His latest project is
http://selfpromotion.com/ -
a URL-registration power-tool that helps you promote
your site to over a hundred search engines and indexes.
You can use it for free, then if you like it, YOU decide
how much you want to pay!
------------------------------------------------------
The big indexes, Yahoo, Open Directory, About.com
(formerly The Mining Company), Snap, and Go.com, are a
great source of hits. But most people don't properly
submit to them, and even if they do get in, their
listings are substandard.
Proper submission to these indexes is becoming even
more crucial because there is a pronounced trend
towards using "human-edited" indexes in search
results. In particular, many of the major search
engines are starting to use Open Directory index
listings in their search results, making it the #2
most important place to list your site, behind Yahoo.
Here's how to optimize your listings for all the big
indexes:
Yahoo
Yahoo is without a doubt the single most important
index on the Internet (though Open Directory (see
below) is rapidly gaining on them!), and it is an
absolute must that you get listed here. After a great
deal of thought, I have decided to disable automated
submissions to Yahoo (on SelfPromotion.com), because
getting listed is so important, and such a "delicate"
process, that it is better to do it by hand.
Yahoo comes in three flavors; the main (original)
Yahoo; the international Yahoo sites; and the regional
(city) Yahoo sites. The original site is by far the
toughest to get into, so if your site is in, or
relates to, a country or region served by one of the
other Yahoo indexes, you should first try to get
listed in them. If you get accepted by one Yahoo
index, you almost always get into them all - and if
for some reason getting into a regional Yahoo index
doesn't get you listed in the main Yahoo index, then
the fact that you are in the regional index will be a
big help when you apply to the main index - and you
should point it out in your application.
Robert's How-to-get-Yahoo'd Advice
First, be patient. It often takes 6-8 weeks for the
overworked Yahoo staff to even look at your site
(though recently, I've been seeing sites accepted in a
week or less IF the submission followed the rules to
the absolute letter)
Yahoo now has a "Business Express" submission service.
You can pay $199 and get a quick thumbs-up/thumbs-down
on your application, but only if your site is a US- based
commercial site. Paying the money does not guarantee a
listing, and the advice I give lower down about crafting
a good submission still applies. For more information about
Yahoo Business Express, use this url:
http://www.yahoo.com/info/suggest/busexpress.html
Warning: Read their terms and conditions carefully
before using Business Express.
My personal feeling is that unless getting a decision
about your Yahoo listing quickly is absolutely
crucial, then you shouldn't use Business Express. What
Business Express buys you is a faster decision, and
perhaps a little more attention to your submission.
But if your submission is properly formatted, you
should get in anyway (just slower).
However, if you submit properly, don't get in, and
you're absolutely sure that your site is good enough
to get into Yahoo, then it might be worth using
Business Express to get them to take another look
quickly. But for most people, it's not necessary.
Second, don't even THINK about bothering them until
your site is 100% up and running, with nothing "under
construction." A good rule of thumb - if it hasn't won
several awards, it won't be good enough to get into
Yahoo. Good site design, fast loading pages, and
content are important. If you want advice on how to
win awards, I have some on my site. You can find it
here:
http://selfpromotion.com/howtowin.t
Third, be gently insistent. If you apply and don't get
in after two months, submit again. But before you do,
go look at your site once again, and see if you can't
improve it.
Whatever you do, do NOT bombard Yahoo with
submissions. If you apply more than once a month,
they'll ignore you until the end of time.
Another good way to get banned from Yahoo is to submit
a site to a regional index that has nothing to do with
that region. Boy do they HATE that!
If you are still having problems getting in, or
getting a change made to your listing, see the note
later in this article about the "secret" Yahoo email
address.
How to apply to Yahoo
First of all, I suggest you print out this article so
you can have it handy when you visit Yahoo.
Visit the main Yahoo site or a regional site (as
appropriate), and do a search (your site title is a
good one) to determine if you are already in the Yahoo
index or not. If you are, then you need to consider
asking them to change your listing using the advice
further down on the page. If not, you need to apply
for a new listing.
It is crucial to understand that Yahoo search results
have several components; Yahoo Categories that match
your query; Web Sites that are in the Yahoo index; and
Web Pages that are drawn from the Inktomi database.
Your site may appear in a Yahoo search and not be in
the index!
If your site does not appear under the heading Web
Sites, it isn't in Yahoo. Many people get confused by
this. They see their site appear under Web Pages and
think Yahoo has listed them. Not so!
Assuming you are not in the index, take your time, and
find the category page that best fits your site. At
the very bottom of this page will be a small "Suggest
a Site" link. Click on it to get to the site
submission page.
If there is no "Suggest a Site" link, then the page
you are on does not allow listings to be added to it,
most likely because it is a very general top-level
page.
A good method for finding the right page is to do some
searches that you think people looking for your site
will do, and note which categories come up at the top
of the search result. Apply to the topmost appropriate
category -- that way, your listing (if you get in...)
will appear as high as possible. More on this below.
Take your time, and carefully read their suggestions
on how to submit. They REALLY mean it. Follow their
instructions to the absolute letter, as if they were
inscribed on stone tablets handed down from Heaven. If
you break the rules (for example, using numbers or
brand names in your descriptions), forget about
getting in. Read those rules. Re-read them. Re-read
them again, out loud.
The #1 mistake people make is that their title and
description read like promotional ad copy. Bad
mistake! What Yahoo wants is a descriptive title and
description. No hype allowed! And if you can make your
description one sentence of at most 15-20 words,
you're less likely to have it edited down!
Apply with an eye to making the job of the Yahoo
reviewer easier; for example, use the "comments" field
in the application form to point out special things
about your site that the reviewer ought to look at.
Three CRUCIAL tips:
First, in each category, Yahoo lists sites
alphabetically by TITLE. So if you can come up with a
plausible title for your site that starts with a
number or the letter A, B or C, go for it. If I'd
known this when I started my site, I'd have called it
autopromotion.com!
Second, choose the alphabetically lowest CATEGORY that
is appropriate for your site. When Yahoo lists matches
found in it's catalog, it lists them by category (in
alphabetic order) and then, inside each category, by
site title (again, alphabetically). Try a yahoo search
about Knitting Needles, for example, and you'll see
that the first category is Business and Economy >
Companies > Arts and Crafts > Crafts > Knitting and
Crocheting, followed by Business and Economy >
Companies > Arts and Crafts > Crafts > Sewing > Sewing
Supplies. This is because while all the higher-level
categories (like Business & Economy) are the same,
Knitting and Crocheting comes before Sewing. It's a
subtle but important point. Even if your company name
is "Zwecky's Knitting Emporium", if you're in that
first category, you'll come up above "Alvin's Knitting
Center" (assuming Alvin isn't smart enough to get
listed in the best category!)
Third and most important, searches on Yahoo will find
your site if the search words appear in the title,
description or URL. So make sure all the important
keywords are in the description and title! Work them
into the text in a natural way -- a list of keywords
isn't acceptable! Because your title will often get
edited, make sure the really crucial keywords are in
the description. And if you can get a domain name that
has your major keywords in it, even better, because
they can't edit your URL!
For example, here is my entry in Yahoo:
SelfPromotion.com - shareservice that automatically
registers your site at major search engines. Use it
for free, pay only if satisfied.
Even though the Yahoo staff edited down my
description, it still has a lot of important keywords
in it. Keep in mind also that Yahoo searches for
strings, not words, so if you can embed keywords
inside other words, even better! Looking at my
description again, you see how I did that:
SelfPromotion.com - shareservice that automatically
registers your site at major search engines. Use it
for free, pay only if satisfied.
While I wish that it said "registers your website" and
somehow had the string "url" in the description, since
I convinced Yahoo to change my description, I get 2-3
times as many clickthroughs than before. So spending
some time crafting a good description is definitely
worth it. This advice also applies to many of the
indexes as well.
Whew! Well, that's all my advice. You may also want to
read Yahoo's advice on how to submit to them, which is
cunningly hidden on their website. Try looking at
their
Help Index :
http://help.yahoo.com/help/search/url/
and their
Submission Tutorial :
http://howto.yahoo.com/chapters/10/1.html
Best of luck to you.
